Orlando Hotel Tax Rates https://aboutorlando.com/orlando-area-hotel-tax-rates/ Tue, 18 Feb 2014 19:06:28 +0000 https://aboutorlando.com/?p=1429 Transient Rental Tax Rate also known as the Florida hotel tax. Find the 2019 tax rate for Orlando, Orange County and all of Florida.

In addition to the Florida Sales Tax Rate which starts with a base rate of 6% then adds any discretionary sales tax surcharge that is determined by each county, the State of Florida also has a Transient Rental Tax Rate. The Orlando Hotel Tax Rates include the transient rental rate which is also known as a Hotel Occupancy Tax (sometimes shown as County OCC Tax) is added to the county sales tax for the amount of your room. This additional tax is imposed on rentals or leases of accommodations in hotels, motels, apartments, rooming houses, mobile home parks, RV parks, condominiums or timeshare resorts for a term of six months or less.

The majority of Florida counties administer the additional transient rental tax rate themselves, with a handful being administered by the Florida Department of Revenue. At the 2019 update, there are 4 counties that do not have an additional tax for accommodation rentals: Calhoun, Lafayette, Liberty and Union. In addition to county-wide transient rental tax rates shown below, Florida law authorizes certain cities in Broward and Miami-Dade counties to impose a local option municipal resort tax on transient rental transactions and on the sale of food and beverages consumed in restaurants and bars. These additional city transient tax rates are not included in the following tax amounts.

The Central Florida Counties consist of Orange, Seminole, Osceola, Lake and Polk Counties. All of these counties, with the exception of Seminole County have included a discretionary sales tax surcharge. An example of the total tax rate when staying at a Central Florida hotel would include the transient rental rate + the county tax (general + discretionary) for a total amount.

Orange County 6.00% + 6.50% = 12.5%
Osceola County 6.00% + 7.50% = 13.5%
Seminole County 5.00% + 7.00% = 12%
Lake County 4.00% + 7.00% = 11%
Polk County 5.00% + 7.00% = 12%

This tax can amount to a fairly large increase in your hotel bill for your Florida vacation and is something that you should ask about when reserving your hotel room. An example of the cost for a week stay at a $200 a night Orlando hotel will be $1575. This is calculated by using $200 * 7 = 1400. Than adding $175 in taxes for the 12.5% rate in Orange County. This is assuming that the hotel is not charging any other fees such as, resort fees, parking charges.

QUESTIONS YOU SHOULD ASK WHEN RESERVING A ROOM:

To avoid sticker shock at the end of your vacation, be sure to ask in advance if your hotel charges for the following:

  • Parking
  • Internet Access
  • Bellman
  • Gym Fees
  • Resort Fees

What is the Florida Sales Tax? https://aboutorlando.com/what-is-florida-sales-tax/ Fri, 21 Dec 2012 01:26:09 +0000 https://aboutorlando.com/?p=90 Did you know that Sales Tax in Florida Counties varies from 6% to 8.5%? See what the Sales Tax is for your county. See the updated rates for 2019 for all Florida counties.

Updated for 2019, the General Sales Tax Rate for the State of Florida is 6%. Each county has the option to add a discretionary sales tax surcharge – which is added to the general Florida sales tax rate. The Central Florida area generally consists of Orange, Seminole, Osceola, Lake and Polk Counties. All of these counties, with the exception of Seminole County have included a discretionary sales tax surcharge. Within these five counties you will find 2 different sales tax rates:

Seminole County 7.00%
Orange County 6.50%
Osceola County 7.50%
Lake County 7.00%
Polk County 7.00%

For most of us that .5 % difference in sales tax goes unnoticed for most purchases. Actually when I ask around, very few people are unaware of what sales tax rate they pay for purchases and services. So, I started thinking, would it be worth it to drive to another county to purchase big ticket items? How much would  the .5% tax savings in Orange County benefit those in nearby counties?

A TV priced at $500 in Lake County would pay tax of $35.00 ($500 x .07 = $35.00) compared to a TV purchased in Orange County where the tax would be $32.50 ($500 x .065 = $32.50).

So on a large priced item the savings would only be $2.50 – certainly not worth the money to drive to another area.

SALES TAX ON A CAR:

When it comes to an item that is delivered or registered to someone, it doesn’t matter which county you purchase the item in, because you will pay the tax rates (general plus discretionary) for the county that the vehicle will be titled in or the item is delivered to. Basically will pay the taxes for the county that you live in. The Florida DMV offers tips on buying a vehicle.

FLORIDA SALES TAX AMOUNTS:

Within the State of Florida, there are several counties that only charge the General Tax Rate. Several counties charge an additional discretionary surtax – anywhere from .5% to 2%. Tax rates in the State of Florida including the date that the tax is to be enforced until are listed below. This list is current as of June 2019:
